Getting your meter data from AGL
Verified 26 July 2026
AGL does not put the NEM12 file behind a download button. You ask for it on a form and it comes back by email. The form is short, and the two choices that matter are easy to get wrong, so they are called out below.
The steps
- Open AGL's metering data request page and use the single metering data request form.
- You need to be the authorised contact on the account. Have your account number and your meter number (NMI) from a bill.
- For the date range, ask for the last 12 months.
- Under data type, choose Interval. Not Accumulative.
- Under summary or detailed, choose Detailed. Detailed is the NEM12 file. Summary is a set of totals and cannot be used.
- Choose email delivery. AGL only sends the detailed interval file by email, never by post.
What to watch for
- Interval plus Detailed, both. Ticking Detailed but leaving the type on Accumulative gets you the wrong file. This is the single most common mistake on this form.
- The usage page download is a different file. AGL's My Account usage page has its own download, and it gives you a readable usage spreadsheet, not the NEM12 file. It will not work here. The request form is the path.
- Allow up to 10 business days. That is AGL's stated turnaround for a single property.
- Four free requests a year. AGL may charge if you ask more than four times in any 12 months, or if you ask for a format other than the industry standard one. Asking for the standard detailed file once is free.
- Left AGL recently? You can still ask for data from the period AGL billed you, going back two years. That request may attract a charge.
If it does not arrive, or you want it today
Your electricity network holds the same data, and in some states you can download it yourself in minutes instead of waiting. Your network is the same whoever bills you. Find your network.
If AGL sends you a file and we cannot read it, our upload will tell you exactly which problem it hit rather than just failing. What a good file looks like.
