Getting your meter data from Origin Energy
Verified 26 July 2026
Origin has an online meter data request, but it does not give residential customers the NEM12 file. Origin's own page says that if you are a residential customer and you need the data in the industry prescribed file format, you have to phone. That format is the NEM12 file, and it is the one we need.
The steps
- Call Origin on 13 24 61.
- Ask for your interval meter data in the AEMO NEM12 format. If that gets a blank response, the phrase Origin uses on its own website is "the industry prescribed file format", and the shorthand most staff know is "the file for the government comparison site".
- Ask for the last 12 months and have your account number and meter number (NMI) from a bill in front of you.
- Ask for it by email. It arrives as a CSV attachment.
Origin's meter data request page is worth opening before you call, so you can point at the note about the industry prescribed format if you need to.
What to watch for
- The online form is the summary, not the file. Logging in and requesting data through the website gets you a readable summary of your meter readings. It will not load here. This is the step most people get stuck on.
- Allow 5 to 10 business days. That is Origin's stated turnaround.
- Two years is the limit. You can ask for up to two years of history. Twelve months is the sweet spot for us.
The faster alternative
If you would rather not phone, your electricity network holds the same data. In Victoria and South Australia you can register on the network's portal and download the file yourself in minutes. Your network is the same whoever bills you. Find your network.
